Understanding moderate to high speed phenomena such as cavitation and underwater explosion bubble dynamics, liquid drop impact, wave dynamics, and vortex and jet flows is facilitated with still photography, high-speed videography and high cinematography. Major components of this capability include:”

  • A 72 ft x 5 ft x 4.5 ft wind wave tank with a flat plate type wave maker at one end and side walls made of Plexiglas to allow optical access. Waves of Froude number scaled significant wave height and modal period corresponding to any of the eight (8) sea states of the NATO Sea State Table. Installation of a sloping floor of adjustable angle enables generation of plunging and spilling breaking waves to simulate the sloping bottom of the surf zone.
  • A high flow rate recirculation loop with Plexiglas test section for observation of different flow phenomena including supercavitation driven by two 15 HP pumps which can be configured in series or in parallel, each pump is capable of 500 GPM at 40 psi head.
  • An 80 ft long, 2 ft x 2 ft towing carriage tank with Plexiglas walls over the whole length, with carriage speed up to 3.5 m/s.
  • IDT Y-3 monochrome high speed video imaging system capable of frame rate from 2,000 fps (1280 x 1024 pixels) to 130,000 fps (1280 x 16 pixels); the camera can be synchronized with a MiDAS data acquisition system.
  • Redlake Motion Scope PCI high speed video imaging system with a monochrome and color cameras capable of frame rates up to 8,000 and 2,000 frames/sec, respectively.
  • High speed data acquisition system with 4 analog input and 8 digital input channels and a 10 MHz simultaneous maximum sampling rate.
  • Waterproof lasers and photodiodes for void fraction measurement with a laser attenuation technique.
  • Several arbitrary waveform signal generators and digital storage oscilloscopes, such as the 4 Channels, 70 MHz Agilent OSO-X 2004A.
  • Plexiglas vacuum cells with electric spark discharge for explosion and cavitation bubble dynamics studies.
  • TSI hot wire/ hot film anemometer; supporting sensors and instrumentation.
  • Other supporting data acquisition equipment, instrumentation, flow meters, pressure gauges, sensitive hydrophones, and high frequency transducers.
  • Plexiglas vacuum cells with electric spark discharge for explosion and cavitation bubble dynamics studies.
